Bike sensors at traffic lights: Traffic lights are required by Washington state law to have sensors to detect bikes (if they’re not on a timer).
Report bike crashes at www.BikeWise.org to help develop a map of safety, transportation and planning flash points that need to be addressed.
Spokane Police Department Launches Bike Lane Violation Enforcement Effort
SPD has put the final touches on the carparkedinbikelane@spokanepolice.org email address. They are ready to field complaints and send out letters when they receive all of the necessary information.
In order to act on the information they will need the following:
- accurate location (that can be an address that the vehicle is in front of or "mid block of the 2700 block of S. E. Blvd," etc.)
- accurate description of the vehicle (make, model, color)
- time and date of violation
- photograph of vehicle parked in the bike lane (this can be attached to the email)
SPD will send out a notice to the registered owner on the first violation. They will add repeat violators to our Traffic Hotline for officers to investigate further which could include issuing infractions.
An existing national site, www.mybikelane.com, has a Spokane section. You may continue to post there too (for the "public shaming" element) but SPD needs to receive information directly in order to follow up. This way the records reside with them, not on a site that might have a glitch or cease to be available as evidence when needed.

Free ad as thank-you for bike rack installation: Local Out There Monthly publisher (and biking Spokane City Councilman) Jon Snyder gives a 1/8 page ad FREE to any business/organization that installs a bike rack. Contact him: jon@outtheremonthly.com. OTM is a BTW Bronze Gear sponsor for the third year in a row, and always a great source for bike events info—thanks Jon!
