April 30, 2009: Commute Challenge Is Heating Up! Spokane, WA – The Bike to Work Commute Challenge presented by Group Health is heating up, with 35 teams entered so far. The point of the Commute Challenge is to encourage fun, healthy competition. Event organizers promise winners “all the fame and glory we can muster, and a place on the Commute Challenge Honor Roll on our web site.” Bike to Work Spokane will calculate and report statistics for various sizes and types of workplaces and organizations, for example: - Percentage of total employees in the workplace participating
- Number and percentage of new bike commuters on the team
- Total miles for the team
- Average mileage per team member
- Total bike-to-work miles
- Average bike-to-work miles per team member
- Total bike-for-other-transportation miles
- Average bike-for-other-transportation miles per team member
- Total days ridden during the week
- Average # of days ridden
“Besides the mathematical totals, we’re watching for interesting categories and match-ups to emerge on their own out of the groups entering,” said Bike to Work Spokane chair Barb Chamberlain. “For example, we have three public transportation agency teams so far: the Spokane Regional Transportation Council’s Cranky Bureaucrats, Washington State Department of Transportation Eastern Region Hauling Asphalts, and another team from DOT, Go Orange. Which one will take the honors? Will Spokane Transit muster a team? Where is the City of Spokane Street Department or Spokane County’s road crew in all of this?” Chamberlain asked. “Bragging rights are on the line.” The competition could get fierce in the higher education category, where Spokane Falls Community College with three teams, Gonzaga University, Spokane Community College with two teams, and WSU Spokane are all entered; Whitworth University and Eastern Washington University have not yet thrown their respective hats in the ring. Rings & Things has set up an internal challenge, with separate teams to pit the “boys” against the “girls.” Two law firms have entered teams so far: Lee and Hayes and Winston and Cashatt. “With a 10 days to go before the week’s events get rolling, we expect to see a lot more teams and some more interesting match-ups,” Chamberlain said.
